Boys, books and reading for empathy 28 April 2025
As our boys grow up, there are concerning trends which we believe educating for empathy has the potential to combat. This training helps you choose and use empathy-rich books which increase reading for pleasure, exploring what it is like to be a boy or young man in 2025, challenge pressures to conform to gender stereotypes, raise aspiration and support wellbeing.
The 2025 Read for Empathy collection features some wonderful books from male writers with characters who are powerful role models. The course helps explore how to use them using the working principles EmpathyLab has developed to use books in an empathy context.
A panel of teachers and librarians share their experiences of reading for empathy with boys, and some top tips.
Easing school transition: reading for empathy to support change 29 April 2025
Looking for new ideas to support successful transition? Reading helps us build our understanding of ourselves and each other, and used in the right way, can be a highly successful tool to support moments of change and anxiety. Discover how reading for empathy can be harnessed as a powerful and positive tool to incorporate into your transition day planning, preparing young people for, and supporting them through, the move to a new year group or school. This short training is ideal for primary or secondary teachers, school librarians, wellbeing / pastoral staff, or parents / carers, who are looking for practical ideas for successful transition. In this training you will:
Learn how reading builds empathy and greater understanding of our own emotions, in order to support change
Hear tried and tested ideas from school librarians and teachers who use books to support transition
Explore the books we recommend for use in transition, helping young people to identify and discuss the emotions a change such as transition might bring up
